Popeyes Allergen Menu (2026): Gluten, Dairy, Shellfish & Fryer Guide

🗓️ 2026 Update (October 10, 2026): Popeyes added several items in 2026, including Chicken Wraps, two Honey BBQ sandwiches and upgraded tenders. Recipes change, so this page is a general guide, not a medical resource. If you have a serious food allergy, check the official allergen guide on popeyes.com and tell staff before you order. All fried items share fryers. See the full Popeyes menu for October 2026.

Eating at Popeyes with a food allergy takes some planning. Almost everything famous on the menu, from bone-in chicken to tenders and biscuits, is coated in batter or made with flour and dairy, and most fried foods go into shared fryers. This guide explains which major allergens show up where, which items are the safer choices, and how to order more carefully.

Shared Fryers and Cross-Contact

This is the most important point for anyone with a severe allergy. Popeyes kitchens fry chicken, tenders, fries, pies and seasonal seafood, and fried items typically share fryers and oil. That means even an item without wheat or shellfish in its recipe can pick up traces from other foods. Flour is also used heavily in the kitchen for breading, so airborne cross-contact is a real concern for people with celiac disease.

There is also the question of frying fat. A Popeyes customer service representative told Halal Watch that fried items at U.S. restaurants are cooked using beef tallow. If you avoid beef for dietary or religious reasons, keep in mind this would apply to fries and pies as well as chicken. Ask your local store to confirm.

Gluten-Free Options at Popeyes

Popeyes has no certified gluten-free menu. Based on the chain’s August 2024 allergen information, Tasting Table reported that wheat flour is in the coating of the classic chicken, tenders and the chicken sandwich, so almost all of the famous chicken is off limits. The items most often listed as made without wheat are:

  • Sides: Red Beans & Rice and Coleslaw.
  • Sauces: Bayou Buffalo, Blackened Ranch, Buttermilk Ranch, Sweet Heat and Mardi Gras Mustard.
  • Blackened tenders: they use a seasoning rub instead of flour breading, but check the current guide and ask about preparation.
  • Drinks: fountain sodas, teas and lemonades.

Cajun Fries are not a safe choice for gluten-free diners because of their seasoning and the shared fryer. For more, read our Popeyes gluten-free guide.

Dairy-Free Options at Popeyes

Go Dairy Free notes that the batter on Popeyes’ classic fried chicken contains milk. Biscuits, Mashed Potatoes with Gravy, the Ranch and Buffalo sauces, and the Cinnamon Apple Pie also contain milk, as do the Chicken Wraps (cheese) and Mac & Cheese. Items more likely to fit a dairy-free diet include Red Beans & Rice, plain Cajun Fries, and non-creamy sauces such as Sweet Heat, but you should confirm each one in the current guide.

Fish and Shellfish

Popeyes seafood menu

Popeyes’ seafood is seasonal. The 2026 seafood menu launched on February 16 with the Flounder Fish Sandwich (fish) and Butterfly Shrimp (shellfish), and the flavored shrimp left the menu in September 2026. Even when seafood is on the menu, it may be fried near other foods, so people with a shellfish allergy should ask how their store separates fryers. See our Popeyes seafood guide.

Peanuts and Tree Nuts

Peanuts and tree nuts are not a main ingredient in Popeyes’ core chicken, sides or sauces, and the chain is not known for frying in peanut oil. Limited-time desserts can change that, so check any new pie or cheesecake before ordering if you have a nut allergy.

Vegetarian and Vegan Diners

Popeyes has very little for vegetarians. Red Beans & Rice is not vegetarian at every location, the gravy is meat-based, and fried items may be cooked in beef tallow, as noted above. Coleslaw, biscuits and drinks are the most common meat-free picks, though biscuits contain dairy.

✅ How to Order Safely with an Allergy

  1. Read the latest allergen guide on popeyes.com before you go. Recipes change, especially for new and seasonal items.
  2. Tell the staff about your allergy when you order, even for items that look safe.
  3. Ask whether fries and seafood use separate fryers at that location.
  4. Order sauces on the side so you can check each one.
  5. For a severe allergy, consider whether the risk of cross-contact is acceptable at all.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Popeyes chicken gluten-free?

No. The Classic and Spicy bone-in chicken, tenders and sandwiches all have wheat flour in the coating. Blackened tenders skip the flour breading, but they are made in a kitchen full of flour.

Does Popeyes chicken contain dairy?

Yes. The batter used on the classic fried chicken contains milk.

Do Popeyes Chicken Wraps contain allergens?

Yes. The wraps use a flour tortilla, a battered tender and shredded cheese, so they contain wheat and milk.

What oil does Popeyes fry in?

A Popeyes representative told Halal Watch that fried items at U.S. restaurants are cooked in beef tallow. Popeyes may change suppliers, so confirm with your store if this matters to you.

Where is the official Popeyes allergen chart?

Popeyes publishes its allergen and nutrition information on popeyes.com, usually linked from the menu or nutrition pages. It is the most accurate source for current recipes.
